MOSFET Regulator/Rectifiers
This post says the Shindengen FH012AA is the best regulator/rectifier in use today. It's rated at 50A output, and runs cooler than shunt-type regulators. It's used on:
- 2006+ Yamaha FJR
- 2006+ Yamaha R1
This thread discusses sourcing the MOSFET-based FH008 and FH012 regulator/rectifiers from CBR600RR and CBR1000's.
- Part numbers beginning with F designate MOSFET-based models. Part numbers beginning with 'S' indicate shunt/SCR models.
- FH008 - 35 amp, found on 2007+ CBR600RRs?
- FH010 - 35 amp, found on late model Kawasakis like the ZX10 and ZX14.
- FH011 - has enormous fins, avoid it (shown as on a 2005 Yamaha R1.
- FH012 - 50 amp, Yamaha p/n 1D7-81960-00-00
- FH020AA 50 amps peak, 35 amps continuous (source)
- Roadster Cycle (Jack Fleming) sells complete FH012 kits.
- Eastern Beaver sells wiring kits for FH009, FH010, FH011, and FH012, though not, apparently, the FH008.
Electrosport
Electrosport sells stators which claim to increase power output over stock. Increased wattage at high RPMs is gained at the expense of wattage at lower RPMs. If a bike is to be ridden around town regularly, the stock stator may be preferred. An image was posted by an Electrosport employee to this thread which shows the output trade off of their KLR650 stators:
Electrosport Warning
There appear to be several accounts of Electrosport products failing due to what appears to be poor construction.
- Alternator Stator Failure and Repair found here.
- This post in the ADV Rider KLR650 stator thread tells of bad customer service and failing products.
Personally, I put an Electrosport regulator/rectifier on my VFR-750 and it was terrible. The charging level fluctuated badly (my headlight would become noticeably brighter, then dimmer) and it failed completely after six months.
Regulators
This post on VFRDiscussions.com recommends Yamaha R1 regulators from 2004 and later:
"lots of folks with R1's from around 03 and earlier had RR problems, but the 04's and up the problem was corrected."
02 - 03 R1 Regulator/Rectifiers appear to be FH001 (Same as '04 - '07 FJR1300)
